ABOUT THE #ENDCUTTINGGIRLS CAMPAIGN
The #endcuttinggirls campaign is a UNFPA-UNICEF Joint programme on elimination of FGM in Nigeria funded by UNICEF-Nigeria. The Goal of the programme is to contribute to the overall goal as set by the Interagency Statement on Eliminating FGM and reaffirmed by the 2012 United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/67/1462 to support governments, communities, and the girls and women concerned towards the abandonment of FGM in Nigeria.

FGM Situation in Nigeria

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) “comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons” (WHO, 2016).  FGM is commonly performed on unwilling girls aged 1 day to 14 years or women in circumstances they cannot give consent. FGM has no known health benefits. On the contrary, the practice is associated with violation of girls/women rights as it deprives the girls of their physical integrity, health, security, freedom from torture, cruelty, inhumane and degrading treatment as well as the right to life when the procedure results in death.
